Getting the flavour of real estate... and a new marina
The Spanish construction industry is in a sorry state, with real estate sales stagnant - or so the news papers tell us almost daily. But there are one or two exceptions, notably on Mallorca.
By Peter Hauptvogel
Many Spanish estate agents saw a dramatic drop in sales during 2009 and 2010. But one person who has no cause for complaint despite the adverse conditions is Heidi Stadler, boss of First Mallorca, who has sailed through the crisis unscathed. The reasons for this are twofold: firstly, she refuses to include any properties with unrealistic asking prices in her portfolio; and secondly, the Austrian has a very charming customer care strategy, and thus boasts many regular clients who have already bought and sold property via First Mallorca on numerous occasions. The average price of property bought or sold through First Mallorca in 2010 was almost exactly one million Euros. People who are prepared to shell out that much for a holiday home are naturally keen to know what it's like to live in it. So Heidi Stadler invites prospective buyers to cook and eat there. Marc Fosh, one of the island's most famous chefs, comes along to lend a hand.

Port Adriano: a marina with the finest prospects
The marina in Port Adriano, in the southwest of Mallorca, will soon be revealing the results of a big makeover. In addition to over 400 berths for yachts of up to 18 metres, there will also be berthing facilities for ships of up to 60 metres in length - featuring their own fuel pumps. A 4,500 m2 shopping area designed by Philippe Starck is set to open later this year between the two basins, and the rich and beautiful will be able to eat at a Sansibar restaurant as of the end of November. Herbert Seckler, proprietor of the legendary eatery on Sylt, has licensed out the name and concept to two Hamburg hotel managers. First Mallorca is also opening an office in Port Adriano. This high-class venture is bound to boost the real estate business in the area.
