From the window of the plane we can see them by the dozen. We have no doubt
about where we are. They welcome us, as we cross Es Pla, the flat central plain. They are by our sides at touchdown. But will we always be greeted by the
Windmills of Mallorca? |

More often than not, the best restaurants tend to be those a little off that beaten tourist trail. Hidden in a backstreet, without a particularly glamorous exterior, one could almost think that the locals wanted to keep these unpretentious eateries to themselves – and who can blame them. |

Palma Aquarium, a living wonder
Coral World describe their world wide marine parks as a labour of love of a small number of underwater enthusiasts. Their latest beau: The Palma Aquarium. Their mission: to entertain, educate and inspire. Their aim: to show us all that there is more than just fish in the sea…
The Palma Aquarium is probably an inadequate name for what is actually so much more. It is in reality an eye opening journey, delving into the depths of the exciting, diverse and mysterious underwater world of the seas, oceans and rivers of our planet.
It is made all the more unique by the fact that each of its 55 aquariums house living marine ecosystems. Yes, everything from the fluorescent corals to the vividly coloured sea cucumbers is alive, not a plastic plant in sight; a demonstration of complete dedication from the world’s leader in underwater aquariums, to reproduction and evolution of species.
From the start of this journey of discovery you start to foster understanding and wonder for the sea’s beauty. The “Old World”, depicts life far below the shining surface of Mediterranean Sea, showing what really lies beneath ‘Mare Nostrum’. See morays, anemones, stingrays and seahorses before moving in to the “New World”, a place for new visions; a myriad of electric coloured sea life from the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans living in harmony in their natural habitats. Then, venture into “The Jungle”, where Piranhas swim in their fresh water environments just metres from lush tropical gardens.
And if this is not adventure enough, “The Big Blue” will blow your mind. In Europe’s deepest aquarium, view some of the 200 species it houses through a transparent tunnel and almost feel those shark jaws brush against you.
Mike Schneider, one of the many guides at the Palma Aquarium, is a mine of information. He and other staff are readily available to tell you about the aquarium’s 8000 specimens from 700 different species housed in 5 million litres of seawater. They may even ask you if you would like to hold a starfish or sea urchin from the touch tank. Mike explains that everyone at the Aquarium has a special job. “Let me introduce you to the ‘cleaner prawns’. They are very important as they actually eat all of the parasites from the surfaces of the other fish. Sometimes you can see the fish lining up, waiting their turn!”
Finally, a visit to the jellyfish aquarium is a must. Soothing lights and music give an almost heavenly feel to the calmly swaying, translucent jellyfish, a perfect memory to end an unforgettable day.
The Palma Aquarium is open every day from 10am-6pm and is located on the Palma-Llucmajor motorway at exit 10. At least 2 hours visiting time is recommended.
