Seafood fit for a King
More often than not, the best restaurants tend to be those a little off that beaten tourist trail. Hidden in a backstreet, without a particularly glamorous exterior, one could almost think that the locals wanted to keep these unpretentious eateries to themselves – and who can blame them. Marisqueria C’an Jordi is one of these places. Tucked away in Palma’s traditional fishing district of Ciudad Jardin, and only 5 km from the city, it is without doubt, one of the best seafood restaurants in Mallorca.
Frequented by the islands top businessmen and politicians, indeed, you can expect a meal fit for a King - or one would suppose, considering that Juan Carlos himself dines there when he is in town. Offering a serious selection of Palma’s finest fish and crustaceans, don’t expect to be given a menu on arrival. No, it is certainly not the service that is lacking, as you quickly realise when you are ushered to a large vitrine offering a wide variety of today’s catch for you to pick and choose at will.
If you go there expecting ambitious, Michelin style creations, you will be disappointed. That is not the point of this place. Seafood is the point. And getting it from the fishing net to your plate, without much interference, is by far the tastiest way to indulge. Your selection of ocean delights are cooked to perfection on the hotplate as you watch, teasing you with delightful aromas as you sip a glass of chilled Albariño. With just a drizzle of olive oil, a sprinkling of parsley and a few freshly grilled vegetables, this is certainly the place to sample that healthy Mediterranean diet. The choice on offer is wide and varied, depending on what the fishermen brought in that morning. From Sea bass to John Dory and Oysters to Crayfish, Andalucian born owners Juan Checa and Felipe Moreno serve up über-fresh produce, without a song and dance. And with a 17 year success story, they know what they are doing.
Signed photo- graphs and personalised thank-you’s from Spain’s rich and famous line the wall above the bar and framed football shirts in glass cases boast of their clientele. From flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucía to the countries sporting champions, quality and customer satisfaction is clearly second to none.
So, to eat King Prawns like a King, visit this “garden city” away from the crowds. Just promise to keep it to yourself…
