Esporlas sits in a valley on the south side of the Tramuntana Mountains and straddles the torrent running through the village. The village, approximately 20 minutes north of Palma, was a centre for the island’s textile industry which flourished by favour of the abundant source of water flowing out of the hills under rain gathering close-by mountains. Although the underground springs still produce a steady flow of pure mountain water the village has no industry and most of its inhabitants make the journey to Palma for employment. Today’s village is popular with tourists stopping off for a coffee in the pleasant main street cafés and the residents of the general area purchasing from the outdoor fruit, vegetable and flower market.
As usual in Mallorca, the village church is the dominate architectural feature. The neo-Gothic church and oratory is dedicated to Sant Crist de la Pois, patron saint of the long-gone textile industry.
Within the general area of municipality of Esporlas there are orange groves and almond trees. Animal fodder is also a crop grown in the valley. On the road out of the village towards Banyalbufar there is one of the area’s main attractions - La Granja, a large manor house with beautiful gardens. From a point in the center of the village a lane leads off travelling uphill through an oak forest to the Hermitage of Maristella.
The nearest point to the sea from Esporlas is the sleepy seaside community of Port de Canonge, approximately 5 mins. from the village center. This almost “hidden from the world location” is reached down a long winding, at times hair-raising, single lane road. But it is certainly worth the journey!
