Area info

The town of Llucmajor in not the most attractive of the conurbations on Mallorca partly due to a repetitive style of architecture and the fact the town was laid out in the fourteenth century in a type of grid system, straight lines and squares. The immediate landscape is also quite flat. Walking through the narrower streets one does experience a sense of a going back in time to a  medieval period.  However, the more interesting examples of Llucmayor’s architectural  are : its parish church of St. Miguel, its construction starting in the 1780s and taking some 70 years to complete to its present form and  the convent of St. Bonaventura, from the seventeenth century.

Overlooking the town’s Plaza d’Espanya are Neo-Classic and Modernist buildings including the fish market, originally the market place and the Town Hall. A few minutes north of the town of Llucmajor is one of the area’s main attraction, the Randa Massif, the location of the Sanctuary of Mare Deú de Grácia, built in the fifteenth century as a small heritage and was enlarged in the eighteenth century to become a church.

In the municipality of Llucmajor there are several stone watch towers to give early warning of pirate raids, an island wide threat during the sixteenth century. Close-by Llucmajor is the Hotel Marriot Son Antem and the two golf courses.

The town of Llucmajor is 13 kilometers from the international airport of Mallorca and approximately 30 minutes from the centre of Palma and is located on the easterly route to the beautiful beach of Es Trenc, and the towns of Santany, Felanitx and the abundant choices of coastal villages, resorts and calas including the resort of Cala d’Or.

During the year there are several fiestas in the area including the most famous during the second week in August, the fiestas of Santa Cándida, with cultural events and the parade of the spectacular paper maché giants with enormous heads. In winter the fiesta of Saint Anthony, the patron saint of animals is celebrated with street bonfires, songs and cooking of pork sausages. The plain of Llucmajor is interspersed with Holm oaks, pines,  olive and almond plantations and vast meadows.
